The situation with Mason Mount has been bubbling for some time and now looks to be coming to an end.

Chelsea want to keep Mount but his contract situation, the lack of agreement and long pursuit from Manchester United mean this is only going to end one way.

When Todd Boehly and the Clearlake group took over they made a point of not wanting to let players get into the last two years of their contracts. They’d been stung the previous season and lost Antonio Rudiger on a free to Real Madrid which left them with a lot to do in the transfer market.

Chelsea made two contract offers to Mount last year and the wages would have been comparable to other big name players at Stamford Bridge.

In an attempt to try and get a resolution to the situation, Chelsea even discussed the possibility with Mount’s camp of extending his contract for a year increasing his money and giving everyone more time to find a solution, but like the other two offers, it was rejected.

The main issue with these negotiations is that the club and the player have not been able to agree on wages.

United look set to make another bid for Mount but that has not been formally sent yet and the Blues insist that if their valuation is not met, they will not sell.

  8. Bidding wars

Declan Rice and Mason Mount have taken centre stage in today's transfer gossip chat as the two England midfielders close in on big money Premier League moves.

The transfer fee remains the big sticking point for both.

While Manchester City could be preparing a £100m offer for Rice, Chelsea have flat-batted a £50m Manchester United bid for Mount.

  10. 'Nketiah out Rice in' - Gunners' thoughts on the summer window

Transfers latest: Declan Rice, Mason Mount and more (9)

    BBC SportCopyright: BBC Sport

We asked users of our Premier League team pages which player you would sell this summer and which player you would buy.

Here are some Arsenal fans' top picks:

Foxy: Sell Gabriel Jesus. Great player but not enough goals. Got to be ruthless. He ain't no Thierry Henry or Ian Wright, or even Alan "Smudger" Smith. Buy - this is tricky. Luka Jovic from Fiorentina. Real Madrid bought him for a reason - just wrong place, wrong time.

Mattilles: Declan Rice in, glass-knees Thomas Partey out. Partey has been great at times, but culpable for some important goals last season. His age and injury problems don't help. Rice is the future and would be an upgrade.

Andy: I would sell Fabio Viera and I’d buy Rice. Viera, although lacking game play showed very little when he did play and is easily pushed off the ball. Declan Rice would add a strong, defensive element to our midfield, which I think we are lacking.

John: Out - Eddie Nketiah. Sad to say it, but if we can get a good fee and use as a makeweight to lower the cost of bringing in Rice and/or Moises Caicedo it should be done. Realistically, we can only keep him or Folarin Balogun and I don't think Nketiah is going to level up from here, In - Caicedo. I'd be more excited about Caicedo in than Rice, especially for the money.

Olowookere: I would sell Nketiah and buy Victor Osimhen from Napoli.

  11. 'Rice fee a huge mark-up on Mac Allister'

#bbcfootball, WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Keith Fit: Declan Rice is almost exactly the same age as Alexis Mac Allister who went for £35m and add ons on the back of winning the World Cup. Yes he has some more top flight games but that’s a huge mark up for basically just being English (well he is now).

  12. Gossip: Partey to Juve?

Transfers latest: Declan Rice, Mason Mount and more (10)

Sky Italy say that Thomas Partey, 30, is open to a move to Juventus this summer.

Arsenal are reportedly looking to make room in their midfield as they look to sign West Ham’s Declan Rice. That, though, has been complicated by Manchester City’s emergence following reports the Premier League champions are weighing up a £100m offer.

West Ham have previously rejected an offer from Arsenal worth £90m, including add-ons.

Former Liverpool and Spain goalkeeper Pepe Reina says Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was "already a manager" before he finished his playing career.

Reina rose through the ranks at Barcelona's La Masia academy with Arteta and believes the signs of a great manager were clear from a young age.

Speaking to John Bennett on BBC Sounds' Arteta: The Making Of Mikel special, Reina said: "He was born as a manager, I think. His intelligence on the pitch is being demonstrated off the pitch also.

"I think the education in Barcelona as a player - especially in his position - is particularly strong. It was only normal that those players in those positions know more football than others. It's as simple as that.

"He was the personality of that [management]. He was lucky enough to finish his footballing career and have a little masterclass with Pep [Guardiola] for three years.

"That's an unbelievable starting point. It's like someone finishing a university course and doing a masters at Harvard. It was lucky, but deserving.

"You knew when Mikel was finishing his career as a football player, he was already a manager - that's why he deserved and got the opportunity to start with Guardiola for three years."

Everton midfielder Tom Davies will leave the club this summer after rejecting a new deal with the Toffees.

Davies came through the academy at Goodison and has scored seven goals in 179 games for his hometown club.

However, the 24-year-old, who joined Everton at the age of 11, has made just six Premier League starts across the past two seasons.

Everton Director of Football, Kevin Thelwell, said: “We offered Tom a new contract, but he feels he has reached the stage in his career where he needs regular first-team football and, as a result, he wants to look at alternative options away from Everton.”

Cardiff City will be allowed to pay fees for players in the January 2024 window after the length of their EFL transfer embargo was reduced.

Cardiff were placed under an EFL embargo because they defaulted on payment of the transfer fee for the late Emiliano Sala.

The embargo had been due to run until summer 2024, but has now been cut by one window.

Cardiff said they were "extremely pleased" with the decision.

The Championship club had challenged the EFL over the embargo, having seen a Fifa embargo lifted after paying the first instalment of the Sala transfer fee to Nantes.

Magpies target Sandro Tonali was the focus of debate on BBC Radio Newcastle's Total Sport Newcastle United Podcast.

Italian football journalist Alessandro Schiavone said of the Italy and AC Milan midfielder: "He has so much quality; I would say he is a complete midfielder.

"You have midfielders who are good going forward and who are good at breaking up play - but he has everything.

"A good passing range, very unselfish, he's good on the ball and off the ball, and his anticipation skills, obviously – he sees things before they pan out. He's good in tight spaces, good at breaking up play, patrols midfield...there is a lot to his repertoire.

"A complete midfielder who would be very complementary to Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, or whoever they bring on. He is one of the best midfielders in the world."

Silva's contract with City runs to 2025 and, while the club are keen for him to sign an extension, he has a number of offers on the table.

Paris St-Germain are also interested in the 28-year-old, as are Barcelona, who have been linked with the Portuguese for the past two summers.

Barcelona have already agreed to sign his club captain Ilkay Gundogan.

However, both clubs could be eclipsed by the salaries on offer in Saudi Arabia.
