1984 Vanagon Westfalia Camper

Asking $32,500

For sale is my beautifully restored Westy that features new paint, new interior and freshened up mechanicals.

I started with a good running rust-free van that was in need of some cosmetic love. Two years later it's done, ready for the next owner.

The van is perfectly simple, no power steering, no power windows, no air conditioning.

Originally Pastel White, I added the Brilliant Orange two tone paint scheme during the restoration. It was a comprehensive paint job:
-all windows, poptop, dash and interior removed during paint;
-if a body panel had severe dents, it was replaced with new metal;
-all body seams were mechanically stripped and re-sealed with new seam sealer;
-all rubber window and door seals were replaced, as well as the Poptop canvas and Poptop seals.

In re-assembling the van I had all the upholstery and carpet replaced as well as the interior panels and door cards. I even replaced the awful fiberglass cabin wall insulation with improved Thinsulate material. The interior is brand new, never camped in, never smoked in, and never seen a pet.

Engine wise, the van is as it arrived from the factory when the speed limit was 55. The 1.9 liter water cooled motor is a factory remanufactured unit, not sure when it was replaced. The van shows over 200,000 miles, and I assume the engine has about half that mileage. The engine runs well and shows consistent compression across all cylinders, around 140 psi. It’s smooth and quiet, but not fast.

The four speed transmission shifts beautifully. It was just taken apart, inspected and received a new 3/4 slider gear and third gear syncro, a common problem for this vintage van.

Tires are brand new (6/2024) and of the proper “D” weight and sidewall rating for this vehicle.

The camping stove and propane tank work as they should. The fridge cools when running on electricity, but have not tested it on propane. The sink and water system has been rebuilt with a new water pump and all new water lines. All camping cabinetry was removed from the van and cleaned as part of the restoration. The Poptop canvas is brand new and features 3 windows for excellent ventilation. It still has the cool original Westfalia stuff like the two rear tables, the original AC extension power cord for hooking up at campsites. All the curtains are in great shape including a brand new windshield snap on curtain for privacy.

The suspension and some other areas were in need of refreshing for safety reasons, so I rebuilt the front suspension, replaced the entire fuel system including the high pressure fuel lines and fuel tank, and refreshed the brake system. Details and new parts are listed below.

The result is a head-turning, smooth driving, great handling Westfalia that is perfect for camping or attending shows and parades. Or it’s a solid platform for an engine conversion if desired.
